Summertime was a project that came out of a conversation with Bill Winchester’s daughter Bethany. For years they played together in the family room for fun or for family functions. Bethany started playing the trumpet in school during the 5th grade and continued playing in concert band and for fun through high school and also through college while earning her degree in TV/Video production. She played her trumpet for the Salvation Army at Christmas time for the donation drive by the red kettle in front of the local Walmart, and also at Christmas celebrations in the church. She has been known to blow some tunes and cool riffs for friends in Hollywood where she now lives.
Bethany said she always wanted to perform with her dad from the days when he played in the rock band Sundown Express. Bill was the lead singer and rhythm guitar player in that band for 32 years until he left for a year and then started to perform with his friend Van Young in a duo called Winchester and Young. Bethany suggested her and Dad should do something together and record a song together. Bill told her it sounded like a great idea but had two conditions. First, he wanted to do a cover song, preferably a classic song that everyone knew, because he had never seriously recorded anything like that except for use as in demo purposes, and secondly, Bethany had to sing it.
Bethany pushed back on that idea because she wanted this endeavor to clearly be a complete father/daughter project, and though she would play the trumpet and sing, she felt it wasn’t enough for Bill to just play the guitar throughout the song, so she insisted that Dad sing the 2nd verse. Though Bill thought it would sound better with just Bethany’s voice, he understood how special that would be and agreed to do it her way. After a few hours of studio time at, The Recording Company in Esperance NY, and with the help of a very talented Piano and Bass player, Tim Lynch, the recording was finished and next the licensing and copyright obtained for the recording.
Bethany had the idea that she wanted to slow the recording down slightly from the way they originally rehearsed the piece and also use a mute on her trumpet in the beginning of the song and behind all of the vocal parts to give it the mood she was looking for. She wanted a somewhat mysterious sound to make people think about it as they listened, and along with her incredible voice recording, she reached her goal. Bill asked Tim to add a short blues style piano riff in the very beginning to introduce the spooky muted trumpet sound which then leads into Bethany’s amazing sultry voice. Success!
